FMC Professional Solutions Launches New Echelon Herbicide
Unique Herbicide Provides Preemergence Control of Poa Annua and Postemergence Control of Tough Sedges and Other Key Weeds

PHILADELPHIA, June 12, 2007 – FMC Professional Solutions, a division of FMC Corporation (NYSE: FMC) announces that Echelon™ herbicide has been approved for use and sale by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Echelon is approved for preemergence and early postemergence control of a variety of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds and annual sedges in golf courses, sports turf, residential and institutional lawns, sod farms and similar areas.

Echelon provides effective preemergence control of Poa annua. In addition, this new herbicide also provides postemergence control of goosegrass and key broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, curly dock and buckhorn plantain. Echelon works quickly, with some targeted weeds showing visible results within days. In a trial conducted at the University of Georgia, Echelon demonstrated strong control of goosegrass as early as three days after treatment (DAT) and continued to provide effective control of goosegrass at 27 days after treatment (see Figure 1, Postemergence Control of Goosegrass with Echelon, in Addendum).

“Echelon gives the golf course superintendent effective pre- and postemergence control of some of their toughest weed problems. It’s like nothing else on the market,” says Rick Ekins, turf and ornamental product manager for FMC Professional Solutions. “With Echelon you get long-term preemergence control of Poa annua and excellent postemergence activity on tough-to-control weeds like goosegrass and a variety of broadleaf weeds.”

Poa annua (or annual bluegrass) invades turfgrasses. A prolific seed producer, Poa annua can produce seed throughout the season, even at very low mowing heights. This makes it a fierce competitor for turfgrasses such as creeping bentgrass, which typically does not produce seed at lower mowing heights.

“For many golf course superintendents, Poa annua control is a planned application. Echelon provides that control along with the benefit of postemergence control of several important weeds present at the time of application,” says Ekins. “It saves time, delivers reliable, effective results, and it’s a novel approach to golf course weed management.”

Product comparisons conducted by Dr. Scott McElroy at the University of Tennessee (2006) showed that Echelon provided superior control of Poa annua, even at 190 days after treatment, than competitive products (see Figure 2: Echelon Preemergence Control of Poa Annua).

Echelon is labeled for use on golf course fairways, roughs and non-playing surfaces. Labeled application rates on warm season and cool season grasses for Echelon range from 0.25 lb/ai to 1.125 lb/ai, depending upon the grass type. The product is available in a suspension concentrate (Echelon 4SC) formulation for the 2007 use season and will soon be available as a granular on fertilizer formulation.

Echelon is the newest product in the expanding FMC Professional Solutions golf portfolio, which also includes Dismiss® turf herbicide, QuickSilver® herbicide, Segway™ fungicide, Talstar® Select insecticide and Talstar GC granular insecticide.
